interior adventures is a series all about my adventures (& misadventures) in re-doing and re-decorating my flat.

Rae Tashman - Love from Berlin bedroom

This is the story about how I ended up with a mattress 20 cm too long.

Once upon a time (about 3 weeks ago), I decided it was high time to replace my mattress. Maybe it was the combination of being, oh, well a cheap piece of shit from Ikea and it being shared with my then-boyfriend and I resulting in constant uneven weight distribution, but my old mattress had turned into a soft lumpy mess. So uncomfortable was this little shit that I regularly opted for sleeping on the sofa for about a month. After deciding to re-do my flat, I also decided that a new mattress was in order. Now even cheap mattresses aren’t exactly cheap, but I reasoned that it’s something you use every day and that your quality of sleep has a huge impact on your daily performance and overall health in the long run. And thus, on one of my Ikea outings with my best friend Azura, I decided to purchase a memory foam mattress.

Now, I am here to let you in on a slight cultural difference. In the US (And in England as well I am pretty sure) bed measurements are given names: twin, double/full (pretty sure these are the same thing, but to be completely honest, I’m still not sure. Mattresses. Mystifying things.), Queen & King. Here in Germany however, they are named by their length in cm: 140cm, 160cm, 180cm. I know, fascinating right? Well actually, it kind of really fucking is because these 20 cm surprisingly make all the difference. And yet, I still can’t seem to ever remember how big my bed is.

Case in point: I have been known to go to Ikea completely unprepared and having a little internal dialogue with myself about centimeters, venturing an educated guess and crossing my fingers that the sheets I just bought are going to fit my bed. Only this time, the discussion with myself went a little something like this: (Me sitting on a showroom bed) “Oh wow, this is nice! A bit small though. Wait a minute… There’s no way that Nick and I slept on a 140cm bed. Nope. No way in hell. Oh god, I just placed an order for the wrong mattress size.” And so, I kindly asked the woman to change my request to a mattress 20cm bigger than originally requested and strode confidently through the ground floor of Ikea, where I triumphantly picked up my new mattress and organized delivery to my flat that evening all based on a shitty unfounded hunch that went against my initial instinct because MATH.

Now Ikea has this amazing little policy where once you’ve payed for same day delivery, there is no way in hell you are getting your shit off that truck if you happen to be as stupid as I am. So, when I got home and realized…oh wait a minute. Ha. This bed is 140 cm. Funny! (Except not.) It was too late.

The end.

Only that wasn’t really the end. Because now I was stuck with a fucking mattress that was 20 cm too long and a bed that was 20 cm too short. So I did what any mature respectable 20-something year old without a car and little time on her hands would do. As I sat there and thought back to all the times where I felt as if I was a cm away from being pushed off the bed when sharing it with my previous boyfriend and decided that those extra 20cm really did make a difference since I clearly would eventually have a boyfriend again and be faced with the same scenario of clinging to my side of the bed, hoping to not fall off If I were to return this new mattress and keep the old. Plus I just really couldn’t be arsed to rent a truck and drive that bad boy back to Ikea with a license I don’t have. So I posted an ad online for my old bed, mattress, and ordered a same same but different (same frame different size) bed from Ikea. The end.

Except still not.

Because after unpacking my brand spanking new mattress and putting it on the floor for the first few nights, I realized that beds were overrated and a mattress on the floor didn’t look half bad and matched perfectly with the boho vibe I was going for anyway. And so, with that, I decided to cancel my Ikea order (this is also an incredible story, but I will be saving that for another post), save a few hundred euros and do the whole bohemian or starving college student thing. As you can see, I have also purchased the small wooden boxes from my first interior adventures post which make for the perfect side tables.

And so, things are slowly starting to come together. I have made a few changes to the hallway and living room which I will be sharing in the next post of this series. Oh, and p.s. It’s my mother fucking birthday today.

    Happy birthday!!

I know right? I guess it ended up being a happy accident, and thanks for the birthday wishes!

  • European bed measurements always confuse the crap out of me! You’re not alone. And happy birthday!

Having an Ikea is such a blessing and curse, haha.

  • That story was wild from start to finish. I love it. Hahah I actually just recently got a new bed as well, and couldn’t get a frame until a week after the mattress came, so I did the whole mattress on floor thing for a while, and I completely agree with you. You’d think it’d be weird, but there’s something sort of neat about it. Mine looked kinda ridiculous, though, because I was using a queen-sized quilt on a full-size bed. ;P Your bed area looks so cute and cozy!!! I love the idea of using the lil wooden boxes as end tables, too. And happy birthday!!!!(^ω^)

I’m actually thinking of building a palette frame for it! thanks lady :)

  • Firstly, Happy Birthday!
I’m giggled all the way through this, as it is exactly the type of thing I would do too. I have no idea how big my bed is, all I know is I take up 50% the cats take 25% and the boyfriend is lucky to get 25% himself. So obviously a bigger one is needed at some point. Your bed looks super comfy and the boxes are lovely too.
Now, go enjoy your birthday, because like fuck do you deserve to :D xxx

Reading through the comments on this post, I am so glad that I am not the only one to make stupid little mistakes like this, haha. And thanks so much, lady!

Oh, no! It’s too bad you got too big of a bed, I would never be able to work out those measurements ♥

I probably shouldn’t have made a snap decision to buy a mattress without measuring my bed, but I am happy with unintended consequences!

  • oh my what a situation lol I would totally keep the extra length too because clinging onto your side SUCKS. It looks really nice! I’ve always wanted to try out putting a mattress on the floor.

    happy birthday!!

    • rae

I am actually really chuffed with the extra 20 centimeters. On nights when I have the bed to myself I just spread out diagonally and it’s AWESOME. And thanks, lady for the birthday wishes!

  • This is definitely a situation I could see myself in as well… I love the new look though! Happy birthday!

Firstly, happy belated birthday! Secondly, I am so glad we don’t measure in cm for mattresses in the States as I am quite confident this story could have been mine. I do think mattresses on the floor look quite lovely though. We put ours on the floor because it helps my husband’s back and, to be honest, I love the boho vibes coming out of it. Your current set up is beautiful and I’m really quite jealous! My duvet cover ripped so right now I have a plain, ugly comforter on the bed!

    • rae

Thanks so much, Elizabeth! And right? It definitely makes things just a tad bit more complicated and prone to mistakes. Sorry to hear about your husband’s back. Was putting the mattress on the floor a suggestion from his doctors? Is it literally just the mattress or does it sit on a box spring as well?

      • Elizabeth Hisle

Nah he hasn’t got insurance so we never saw a doctor. Our Ikea bedframe broke, we didn’t have the cash at the time for a new one on the spot, and so we experimented with sleeping on the floor. It turned out to be a happy accident! Just a mattress for now. No box spring.

  • Happy birthday!
What a great story to read – had me giggling throughout! As always, love your way of writing and story telling. Also great problem solving I must say, looks like it worked out nicely :P

Thanks so much, Katia! So glad to hear that this story had you laughing :) And it means so much to me that you enjoy my writing!

Thanks, Jessica. I am quite happy with how it turned out as well!

  • Happy birthday, Rae!! Personally I really love the mattress-on-the-floor look – SO much comfier (and more fun!) than having a raised bed, I think. Little misfortunes like that always make for great stories though, and I’m happy yours ended up falling into place :)

Thanks so much, Becky! And I totally agree. I think it actually feels a lot more cozy now than it did before.

  • I love the mattress on the floor look! Happy Birthday! <3

      Thanks so much Jennie!!

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I hope you’re having a wonderful day.

Your bed looks awesome on the floor anyway. Who need beds? They’re just something to clean under, and tell your cat to get from under with a mouse.

I feel you with the IKEA confusion. In England we call it single, double, etc, so IKEA always baffles me and I’ve bought the wrong sized sheets a few times. I always measure my bed and write down the measurements whenever I go now.

    • rae

Thanks Rosie! And it does look quite nice that way, doesn’t it? I am definitely feeling the whole boho vibe. I still might build a small platform to go under the bed just to raise it a bit from the floor though! And yes, that is what I should have done. Time to write down measurements from now on!

  • Happy belated birthday! I love shopping for interior items and IKEA can be a lot of fun for me but boy it can be so confusing and a lot of work at times too. I would be so confused by the size of my bed and I’m sure I would’ve picked the wrong one too. haha

  • Happy birthday! I hope this year brings many more stories to tell ^-^ Haha this was quite the adventure. I would think that beds with measurements would be easier to figure out than beds with names! Anyways, I’m glad it worked out, and I love how it looks :) So many pillows!! I don’t know how I’d ever get out of that bed in the mornings :P -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s

    • rae

Thanks so much! I never realized how confusing shopping for a mattress could be. And thanks, luckily it did! And trust me, getting out of bed each morning definitely a challenge ;)

  • Mattress shopping is TOUGH. Mine is about an inch too thick/tall? I have to hop to get up there. I adore your new set-up with the boxes and cushions though!

    • rae

Haha, you know I have actually wondered about this, especially with thick matress pads how that can affect the fit of sheets and stuff. Oh no, hopping up is never good! and thanks so much, Michelle!

  • MaisyMeow

I love this set-up – it all worked out well in the end! :)

They seriously are the worst and lead to terrible sleep! Thanks, I am still working on it, but it’s definitely one of the most relaxing spaces in my flat.
