Atlas of Beauty - photographer: Mihaela Noroc - for lovefromberlin.net

I recently re-discovered Romanian photographer Mihaela Noroc’s project, “Alas of Beauty”, and figured that since “Atlas of Beauty” is an on-going project, it would be great to share some more photos from Noroc’s project but this time from a slightly different perspective.*

Last time, although I touched upon the importance of showing all different kinds of beauty so that all women can see themselves represented, I shared Noroc’s work as part of my Visual Stimulation series. This time I have chosen to share these other photographs for Conscious Beauty & Health Fridays.

Noroc’s work is extremely powerful, because it throws beauty conventions out the window and shows the viewer that beauty can be found all over the planet, not just in the blonde hair, blue eyed five foot nine models in magazines.

*Some of the women featured in these photos were also featured in my previous post about Noroc’s work, but are different photographs from the same series.)

What a great project! Some of the photos remind me a little bit of Frida Khalo, which is one of my favourite artists.

I adore her work! 1000 times better than any model on a cover!

    • rae

Her work IS absolutely stunning. I would not say that it is 1000 times better than any model on a cover though, because those women are beautiful too, but I think this project just goes to show that models are not the only women on this earth who have immense beauty. Just being alive makes us all magnificent human beings.

  • Wow! These photos are so gorgeous! Love them!

  • I adore collections of global beauty like this. I feel like for quite a while society’s ideal version of what is beautiful has been getting narrower and narrower and it is only recently that people are standing up and reminding us all that there is more than one version of beauty. These women are all so stunning yet all so unique. I wish they could all be gracing our magazines rather than cookie cutter models!

    • rae

Oh Kasie, I could not agree with this comment more! I think the problem is that although all women of all races, ethnicities, etc. are stunning, if we are only constantly fed a very narrow definition of beauty (which tends to be very western, blonde, etc.), we grow up believing this is the only kind of beauty, which is simply not true, we are just not being shown other kinds of beauty. At the end of the day, women who fit the narrow western definition of beauty ARE beautiful, but so are so many other women from all over the globe and the more we highlight that, the more women all over this planet can celebrate their femininity and beauty.

  • Thank you for sharing this! I ADORE this concept and the name, Atlas of Beauty. Projects like this are so important!
