Currently indulging in a bath courtesy of Lush’s Amandopondo. This particular bubble bar has the really clean and relaxing scent of roses … if only I could actually smell something. Still nursing a nasty cold which of course struck during a long holiday weekend. The one possibly positive outcome of having a particularly bad cold is that it forces you to relax and slow down a bit. Which I have been doing for the past few days despite all inner protests of “but Rae you have so much work you could be doing right now!”

Last night, my girl Carly came by after work to keep me company. She was equipped with white wine and soy delicious ice cream sandwiches. Does this girl get me or what? Willst hanging out, Carly showed me this interesting online quiz, called the Self Defeating Beliefs Quiz. Now the website itself definitely looks like something designed during a 7th grade html electives course from 2004 equipped with cheesy animations and a bad repeating background, but let’s just ignore that for a second.

The quiz consists of Now no 96 questions, which attempt to asses the areas in your life and specific thought processes you may have that might be causing you more harm then help. I’m obviously aware that this is just some 5 minute internet quiz, but the insights were relatively accurate. Out of the 12 self-defeating beliefs, my one real problem area was: To feel happy and be worthwhile I must achieve, succeed at whatever I do, and make no mistakes. Well now secret’s out incase it wasn’t painfully obvious already. The cool thing with this test, however, is that it comes equipped with information and suggestions on how to deal with each self-defeating belief. For instance, under the self-defeating belief of perfectionism, there is a list of problems such a mindset could cause, a general explanation for why we might be perfectionists, how to catch ourselves in the act, and tips on trying to break the behaviour. There is also a list of the most common beliefs held by perfectionists juxtaposed with a more realistic belief one should strive to have.

This test isn’t really meant to be anything too serious, but for anyone interested in becoming the best version of themselves and working towards that goal (or wait, maybe not, because that sounds exactly like something a perfectionist would say … oh well whatever …) go ahead and take this quiz. The tips and tricks they give you might just help you out a bit and allow you to gain better insight into the causes of some of your distresses.

I love that you posted this. I find I have exactly the same problem, and am sometimes too scared to even start a project for fear of it not being perfect. There’s loads of really interesting information to be found about perfectionist procrastination and paralysis (to give it it’s semi-official name!), it’s so interesting and very worth reading. I will definitely be taking the test and checking out the advice, thanks for sharing!

I often have self defeating thoughts it took me a fews years to work up the courage to go back to school. I’m going to take this test to see how I can better manage my thoughts. Thanks for sharing this!

  • I actually just took the test after reading this (I got especially intrigued by your very accurate description of the websites’ layout). And I agree that it’s rather insightful for a 5-minute internet quiz.

By the way, I think your shoes are badass! :o
