I have recently been reading more and more about what goes into makeup, after repeatedly having issues with foundations (a reason why I never wear them). During my research, I also took a look into the difference between vegan and cruelty-free, as well as which brands were vegan and/or cruelty free and which ones weren’t. I actually discovered how little I really knew on the topic and learned, to my dismay, that many of the brands I had simply assumed were not testing on animals or used animal products actually do.

Coupled with my increasing fear of synthetic ingredients (FUN FACT! The inner hippie in me also hates microwaves – I don’t own one for this reason!), I decided to dive into the bottomless resource that is pinterest, and see what kind of vegan, cruelty-free, do-it-yourself recipes were out there for makeup.

Although I have yet to make them myself, I was totally impressed by What’s that Smell’s DIY homemade loose face powder, The Clean Dish’s all natural homemade blush with dried raspberries, and hello glow’s creamy marsala diy lip gloss, and will definitely be giving these diys a try very soon.

What is your take on synthetic makeup or makeup that is not cruelty-free or vegan? What are your favorite cruelty-free and/or vegan brands?

  • I *try* to not use synthetic makeup much, like you, I’m a hippie in the makeup game – don’t like toxic ingredient just chillin’ on ma face, yknow? I also don’t really use a microwave so high-five on that one! But it’s hard, especially when I have redness on my face and I just feel the urge to have foundation on… the daily struggles. Humph. Well at least you’ve given us a few new leads to go on in DIY makeup ;-) have to check that out now!

Haha, glad to read that I am not the only one! Hope your inner hippie will be loving making these DIYs!

  • Even though I know a loooot of makeup products contain ingredients that are harmful to both human & nature, I kept on using them cause they’re everywhere! This is a great post to read for all of us who wears makeup :) xx

It is true that it is a lot easier to just go to the store and pick up what is available, so it is so great that there are also more and more organic brands on the market, if you are not up for the DIYs! So glad you enjoyed this post, Julia!

  • I’m completely against animal testing, though I’ve got to be honest and say that, like you before, my knowledge on the subject is abysmal. For this reason alone, I don’t wear much makeup or own a lot of makeup in general, for fear of using products which go against this belief. This has been a great reminder for me to read into the topic more. Thank you for sharing, Rae.

So glad that this post could nudge you in the direction of learning more about animal testing! I agree with you entirely – in this day and age, there seriously is no reason for us to be testing on animals for makeup brands. No animal should have to sacrifice it’s life for me to wear a new shade of lipstick.

  • I don’t own a microwave for the same reasons haha. I saw the diy’s and they are definitly worth the try. It’s so sad that we are in 2016 and the brands still use animal testing, like come on, they should improve themselves and stop it! But I’m guilty too because even though I don’t know if the brand I use test on animals I buy it anyway, so I should do some research.

I always thought I was just a weirdo, so it’s nice to see that there are other people who steer clear of microwaves as well, haha. And I agree with you entirely! In this day and age it is totally unnecessary to be testing on animals to create beauty products! And don’t worry, I am guilty of owning some makeup that has been tested on animals, simply because I assumed no company in 2016 would still be doing such things. But if you already own it, simply use it so you are not wasting, and look for cruelty-free vegan dupes when you have to re-purchase!

  • Super cool post, Rae. I’m totally guilty of wearing makeup 5-6 days out of the week, but I do try to do some research into brands that don’t test on animals. DIY makeup is just so cool and I respect anyone committed to doing whatever they can to be more eco & animal friendly in their lifestyles.

I exclusively use products that are cruelty free, though not all natural. If I see something and I’m not able to tell if it’s CF, then I don’t buy it until I know. I also do not buy any brands that sell in China, because China requires animal testing by law. My cosmetics are not always vegan, but I’m working on that too. Some of my favorite CF brands are Milani, Elf, Wet n Wild, Too Faced, and Urban Decay. However, I do not know if these are strictly vegan lines – I know both Wet n Wild and Elf have quite a lot of vegan products and I do think Urban Decay does as well. Eventually I might look into making my own makeup though – blush wouldn’t be too hard, but eyeliner is my biggest weakness and I haven’t seen a good DIY yet.

I think it is really awesome that you are so conscious of where you put your money and what you put on your face/body. You rock, lady! I had no idea about this law in China – thank you for making me aware of it! I will definitely keep this in mind. And thanks for the heads up about vegan brands!

      • Elizabeth Hisle

You are welcome and thank you! Yeah, a lot of people seem to not know about China’s animal testing law. It is 100% of why I stopped using MAC. Stopping animal cruelty used to be their social cause… until they realized they could make some money in China. :/

  • Thanks for sharing these DIYS! I have been wanting to start making my own makeup, so this is really helpful. All of these recipes look so good! :)

  • These are awesome DIYs! I’ve really only gotten super into makeup recently, and because of all the awesome resources out there, I’ve been pretty lucky to buy mostly cruelty free from the start. But making my own–why that’s even better! I love DIYs, as you might know, so I might just try these out!

  • Great and inspiring post. I have only DIY’d lip balms, scrubs, and body butters, but my sister is really into DIY’ing her own makeup. I use a lot of cruelty-free and vegan brands. I also love The LIttle Alchemist, Elf, and Olive Oil Beauty, etc.

So glad that you enjoyed this post, lady! That is so cool that your sister DIYs a ton of her own makeup – I am very impressed. It’s also awesome that you are into DIY-ing skincare products and lip balms. And yes, such a fan of ELF too!

  • Ha, so funny–I don’t use microwaves, either! My family hasn’t owned one in years. Who wants all that radiation zapping through your food, am I right? ;)

As for makeup, I hardly ever wear it, but when purchasing personal care items I look for vegan, cruelty-free, and natural (preferably organic) ingredients. DIY is absolutely a great route to take, too–you know exactly what goes into whatever it is you’re using, which is awesome. Best of luck with these recipes!

  • Interesting post, Rae. I actually don’t like wearing foundation for the same reason as you. I think so far there are two foundations which agree better with me, but I only wear them if I am going out for an event. I like to let my skin breathe and be chemical free. My daily makeup routine is mostly limited to lipstick and mascara. And like you, I do not own a Microwave! It freaks me out! I have not considered trying any homemade beauty products, and will probably try it for fun someday to see if I like them. Thanks for sharing your picks :)

    • rae

Ah that is so funny that you also don’t use a Microwave – and I also wonder if there are more women out there like us to just tend to steer clear from foundation all together. I also sometimes wear it for special occasions, but even then, I always kind of reget it as I usually break out afterwards! And do let me know if you end up making any of these DIYs!

      • Haha yes it is funny! I guess being a scientist and reading about all the junk we surround ourselves with plus with a desire to lead a more “natural” lifestyle lead me to bypass things like microwaves and limit my exposure to foundation. The main reason I actually don’t wear foundation isn’t because it makes me break out but because I can feel when I have something on my skin and that bothers me sooo much!

        • rae

I am the same – I don’t get how other people seem to wear foundation all the time and not have their skin rebel on them because mine always does! And yes! I don’t even really like the feeling of being hidden under a layer of what feels like paint!

  • Vaida Tamošauskaitė

wowzers! I’m also very much up for all the cruelty free, and not tested on animals.. tho it’s really hard to find an affordable brands these days. Or as you said, some of them provides with the information that they are cruelty free, but when you do a little more of a research – you discover that they are not :[ that is sad.
Luckily we’ve got a few in Lithuania, and they have been my favorites since I’ve discovered them. And yes, I’m also very much for beauty DIYs and these are definitely on my list! Thanks for sharing those, Hun!
    Vaida @ http://www.donttellanyone.net/blog

    • rae

That is true, but that is why DIY is so amazing – you can make your own cruelty-free vegan products for a fraction of the price! Although I do think that as vegan and vegetarian things become more and more mainstream, we will have access to cheaper, vegan and cruelty-free makeup brands!

  • Thanks for the makeup-ducation! I use Giovani products on my hair which are also cruelty free and affordable. xoxo Daphne http://www.tolovewithstyle.com

  • This is such a useful post! I’ve set myself a no-makeup challenge where I don’t use any make up with the exception of those brands which meet animal welfare and environmental standards (which many unfortunately don’t – MAC, seventeen, makeupforever are a total no go!) So these links have been great – thanks :)
