Hands down, one of the most stressful parts of moving is getting your shit from point a to point b. Now, seeing as this was the first really big move I have ever made in my life – I have moved from dorm to dorm or shared apartment to shared apartment, but I had never moved from my own entire flat to another before – I’m not even exactly sure how people usually do these kinds of things. I assume they just invest in a crapload of cardboard boxes and start packing away.

While this is definitely one way to do things, not only must this be insanely expensive, but it’s extremely wasteful as well. I mean seriously, what are you going to do with all of those brown boxes after moving into your new home? Build a massive adult fort-maze? (Wait, actually that is kind of a brilliant idea…)

Enter Box at Work. While I do not want to go dashing anyone’s dreams of building a box fortress, I do think it’s worth letting you guys know that there are environmentally friendly ways of doing things as well. Box at Work is a storage and moving service located in Germany and headquartered in Berlin that uses re-usable green containers to make your moving process simple and stress-free.

You simply order a package depending on how many boxes you think you will need and Box at Work will magically bring lovely 100% recycled green boxes brought to your old flat ready to be packed along with moving blankets, a hand truck, moving dolly (that conveniently fits the green boxes to a T), and some packing material. It’s up to you to fill said boxes and bring them over to your new flat, but Box at Work will pick up the boxes from your new location after you are all moved in, meaning the moving process is virtually hassle free. And the best part? You don’t have to worry about disposing craploads of cardboard boxes (we all know what a nightmare that can be!) and can rest happy knowing that you did your part to try to avoid unnecessary excess waste! Karma points for you and your new home!

  • What an awesome idea. Love how it’s environmentally friendly! And comes without the hassle of breaking down boxes and whatnot. Happy moving :)

  • Love that. We use something similar at work when other offices have relocated to ours and I wish this existed for individuals in the UK but I am not sure it does… When I moved I posted a message at work and got a load of used boxes from a few people who had recently moved. The crates they use at supermarkets for fruit are fantastic as well. Here supermarkets leave them out for people to take home if they need them.

  • Definitely a great way to move and I think they have similar companies in many cities as well! I’ve moved twice, but the amount of stuff we had didn’t require as many boxes as they were offering, so we went to the local grocery store where they offer used banana cardboard boxes for customers to take. It is pretty handy as well :)

  • The idea of moving in an environmentally friendly way is wonderful, Rae. We all need those extra karma points, don’t we? Loving these photos, too, and how adorable are those shoes?!

Have you moved in completely yet?

  • I need to use this next time we move. There’s a similar service here in NYC, and we legitimately move every year (in the past 10 years, I’ve lived in 10 different apartments). I hate moving with a passion now, so, anything to make my life easier.

  • What a wonderful service! The boxes left over following a move are such a hassle to get rid of and I always feel SO wasteful. I’ll have to find a similar service in LA next time we move!

  • Do you keep the boxes or do they take it back? I should definitely try to find an equivalent business here in Philly! Moving out of dorms at the end of every year and dealing with summer storage is a universal struggle for college students living on-campus :P My friends had saved their cardboard boxes from last year and they had extras so I used those. Next year I won’t have to worry about moving because I’ll be in my apartment for two years!! -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s

Lovely photos and great idea! It must feel so relieving to be done with the worst part of moving!

  • I seriously need these for my moving but then again it “does not exist” in Bangkok. I’m using the post office boxes instead hahaha i dislike moving often

  • This is an amazing invention! After moving back home from uni, I realised our old house was far too big for us and had many sad memories with it (cat passing away etc) so I persuaded them to move to a smaller house (5 bedroom -> 3 bedroom) and even though we sold much of our stuff or donated it before the move, we still needed 4 boxes to move into our new property; if only I had known of this company then! However, we did use the recycling bins provided by the council :)
