Watch this Now is a series that takes a look at films (short and long) and documentaries that are thought-provoking and beautiful.
Seeing as it’s been a while since LFB has featured video content, I would like to share with you to you a wonderful short film I recently stumbled upon. George Butler, an artist and illustrator whose work focuses mainly on travel and current affairs, was recently filmed by Tim Brown, a director and photographer based in East London. In this short film, Butler talks about his reportage experiences in Afghanistan following the withdrawal of US and British forces. His words are intersected by video footage of Butler in Afghanistan juxtaposed with Butler’s illustrations. Says Brown,
This is not a story about war, or poppy cultivation or even the ongoing governmental issues that have been so prevalent in Afghanistan’s more recent history.
This piece offers up an intimate description of a country that is just coming out of a thirteen year period of foreign military occupation. With the vast amount of negative coverage Afghanistan has seen over the last decade, reportage illustrator George Butler aims to portray a first hand impression of how things are developing and how life continues despite the uncertainty of the countries situation.
