In the Home is all about interior design and making your cozy space your own with a strong emphasis on conscious living.

As much as I am all about reducing, re-using, and recycling, I do make allowances for certain purchases, like holiday decor and homeware while still keeping the environment in mind. After all, everything is about compromise. Below are some tips for how you can decorate this December while still practicing a conscious lifestyle:

How to decorate consciously

1-2: Sort through your old decorations from previous years – Go ahead and pull out all your decorations out of storage, (1) pick out the decorations you can re-use, and (2) donate the ones you no longer like. – It’s a win-win situation. You may find that you already have about 50% of the decorations for this year already. And by giving away old decorations you no longer like, you are clearing out space and making another family’s holiday season that much brighter during this time of year.

3: Invest in decor that will last you a while – Pieces that withstand the test of time are those that are not only built to last, but stored away properly after the season’s end, and ones we will not grow tired of over time. Although our tastes change, I would suggest that any new decorations you purchase this season be ones you feel that you will be liking seasons to come and ones which will be able to be re-used year after year provided you wrap them up carefully and store them away safely.

4: Create your own from nature: There are tons of amazing bits to source from nature. Go out on a walk and collect pinecones. Buy oranges and create your own dried orange slices. Get creative, and you may find that you don’t really need to purchase much this season.

I hope this list gave you some ideas for seasonal decorating and please leave your own tips below in the comments!

  • I’m not so sure about creating my own, I’ve never really thought about it. But when it comes to Christmas decor we’ve been using the exact same pieces we did as kids! I’ve never really understood why you’d continuously change every year. These things only come out for a few days a year!

Very true. While I know that many families do store their items away and pull them out each year, I don’t understand why the shops are full during christmas every year of people buying more decor?!

  • I’ve always wanted to create my own decor straight from Mother Nature’s gift but I think, with the culture here, it’s quite impossible. I am a huge fan of donating, though, just because I’m a pretty severe hoarder, so I’ve always got lots to give away! That said, I’ll always have enough to re-use as well!

  • Nice inspiration. I agree, there are so many ways to decorate by being crafty, I just do a bunch of DIYs normally. But, I grabbed a few things from H&M and I was quite surprised with their home collection. I used some pieces for a friends new home for designing, and definitely will be going back to get some items for myself. :) Happy Holidays! /Madison

oh yas. this one’s so on time, and so inspiring! i really agree on that re using part, and so donating! i haven’t actually thought about the last one tho. but keeping in mind that i’m decorating my xmas tree with the same things as last year, i guess i’m left with nothing to be donated, hah. maaaybe next year i’ll change my mind and will bring more sparkle, as currently i’m still in love with something minimal and super simple :)

  • I always reuse old ornaments and decorations. I have so many memories attached to them that there is no way I wouldn’t use them. I also like to get a little crafty which is always fun!

  • I try to re-use as much as possible. But it’s so hard to store all the supplies. Sometimes it’s just best to live very minimal.

    http://www.pixics.com/blog

  • My family has always reused the same decorations. We got our first tree and decorations over ten years ago (it’s a little 2-3 foot, fake tree) and we still use them to this day. Even though we don’t really celebrate Christmas, I don’t think the holidays would be the same without those old decorations and tree. It’s like, that’s my childhood right there! A lot of our family friends like to be a bit lavish with their trees and decorations – I realize this right now, I never felt envious of them for having something nicer and newer every year.

  • I definitely need to sit down and do step 1. I’ve got decorations in storage from when I was in elementary school! While I do like some sense of nostalgia, I think that we could add some freshness to our tree.
