Instafinds is series featuring stunning photography from the many talented photographers active on instagram.

Although I have definitely been enjoying instagram’s most recent update (being able to post horizontal and vertical photos is somehow so much more game changing than one would think), there is still something quite magical about the square format that made instagram famous to begin with. Here are a couple of my recent favorites.

How do you guys feel about instagram adding more format options?

  • I think it’s great how new options have been added, but for the most part I’ve stuck with the classic square.

    Thanks for the #instainspiration!

    • rae

Oh I do too! The options are nice :)

  • Beautiful photos. Personally I like the change, more options :)

Me too – I have been uploading only portrait and landscape since the update, but the square also has it’s merits!

  • Aiste

Great shots, true inspiration! Well, I’m not happy about the changes…I agree that square was that special thing in instagram. Now it’s like every single social media…

I do still think that Instagram is still unique and will be using it, but I can see why some people are not a big fan of the update either!

  • I do quite agree with square photos being magical. Loving the second shot, a lot.

    Have a lovely weekend, Rae.

Glad you enjoyed the selection, May!

  • I totally get why Instagram decided to add more options, because it opens up an entirely different world of content, but I’m with you on sticking with square. It restricts you to a format otherwise not seen in standard photography which only encourages you to be more creative in your framing. #TeamSquare

I mean I personally have been using the new formats a lot now, but I do still love the square :) It definitely harkens back to medium format days!

  • These photos are beautiful! I still like the good old square format, they somehow look different and unique!

There definitely is something about that square format, haha!

  • I love the challenge of formatting photos to a square. There’s something about the uniformity of the size that makes all the photos become a sort of collection.

    • rae

The challenge was definitely something that kept me on my toes, but I do like having vertical and horizontal formats as well :)

  • I love the new update haha xD I still use the square ones too,but I like that I am able to choose. Mainly because I take a lot of wide photos that are not quite the same when you fit them into a box.

    • rae

The freedom to make that choice is pretty nice!

  • Oh very cute post sweetie
    xx

  • I feel like the whole point of Instagram is that it’s your life in squares. Now that you can post in different sizes, I feel like it’s no different from posting on other social media. My friends (who are avid Instagrammers) love the update though! Anyways, your latest instafinds makes me want to get a hammock to put up in my room! I really would do it, but I just don’t know where I’d hang it from (not really anywhere sturdy to tie it to) -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s

    • rae

To be honest, from a photography perspective I really do love the update and I do think they have solved things relatively elegantly by still cropping into a square for your actual instagram page!

  • I miss the time with they were all in squares too, it’s like the iconic theme of instagram. But yes I do post in different sizes now that they have the new update. Love those mood and tone of the photos so much.

The square has definitely become instagram’s iconic format although originally medium format cameras were using this ratio as well – but I think that was the point in the beginning – to harken back to those film days. Glad you enjoyed!

  • agree with you! square photos on instagram are the coolest.

    • rae

I really do love all but there is something magical about that medium format!

  • Love a good square pic! Some of these are super dreamy!

    • rae

      Glad you enjoyed!

  • Well, I am a newbie on Instagram (@charlottesframe) but I do prefer the square format. Because you still see it in squares on your profile page. So I stick to the square. I think I only have 1 picture that isn’t a square on IG.

    • rae

I think that vertical photos work better in the feed in terms of getting noticed, but I do still love that square format!

  • Instagram will never cease to amaze me. People take such lovely photos. Even though we can now upload pictures in landscape size, I rarely do it. I love that square haha.

    • rae

Oh I agree! it is really amazing what some people can do with just the camera on thier phone!

  • I personally always gravitate towards the square. There’s just something about it :)

    • rae

There really is something beautiful about it and definitely harkens back to medium format photography.

  • Kim

Lovely curation of squares here;) I personally think it was a bit of a mistake for Instagram to add more formats. The squares were sort of like their personal signature that set them apart from all the other photography platforms.

    • rae

While I do actually loved the freedom of having more options and think that shooting portrait looks so great in the feed, I can definitely see where you are coming from, Kim!

  • I still love the square size pic if I’m honest, but I think that may just be because I’m not used to framing my photos as portraits after so long! These photos you’ve find are super pretty :) xx

    • rae

It’s funny because it first took me a while to figure out how to nicely compose things in a square format as I was so used to portrait and landscape.

  • The square made me want to be apart of instagram!

    • rae

So glad it inspired you to join and start taking photos!

  • carlyvanwatts

I don’t actually use Instagram (terrible! I know haha) but I think it’s cool that they’ve added more formats :) It might be really helpful for artists! xxx

    • rae

I agree! I started to use the new formats as soon as they came out!

  • Elizabeth Hisle

Nice finds, especially the third picture. Like many others have echoed, I do like to look at the square format when I am looking at a grid… but I’m glad I can post portrait now. So much nicer to look at in the actual feed. I guess there’s something nice about everything.

    http://aroseisinbloom.blogspot.com/

    • rae

Thanks so much, Elizabeth! And yes I do love the new format especially for the feed and instagram has solved the problem elegantly by still keeping things in grid format on the profile view.

  • I really liked the square instagram, because it’s how it got started…Well, I guess change is always good, right?
