As mentioned in my post about Old San Juan, my dad and I visited Castillo San Cristóbal while in the old part of the city. Castillo San Cristóbal was built by Spain in 1783 to defend the city of San Juan and protect it from land-based attacks. This fort is the largest fortification built by the Spanish in what made up the New World, spanning 27 acres. The fort is enormous, made up of rooms for soldiers, headquarters, tunnels with dungeons below, and much more.
The fort also provides incredible views of the city from atop its perch as well as incredible panoramic views of the sea and the port of San Juan below – although I am pretty sure the Spanish soldiers were not staring down cruise ships from inside the fort (ah, how times have changed!). Castillo San Cristóbal is definitely not to be missed, should you find yourself in Old San Juan. Not planning on traveling to the city any time soon? Don’t worry I’ve got you covered. Just sit back, relax, and scroll through this post to get a taste of Castillo San Cristóbal from the comfort of your home. You can thank me later.
