Globetrotting is series is all about my adventures in travel. They include my tips, takeaways, and realizations about travel, as well as recommendations for food, culture, and nightlife.

It feels like ages ago since I was under the Tuscan sun, experiencing Italy for the very first time in my life. Although I was there to shoot a wedding and ended up with a nasty stomach flu that basically put me out of commission during my short stay in Tuscany before heading off to Florence, I still managed to snap some photos of the incredible hills and villas tucked between the trees. For those of you who have never visited Italy, I am boldly stating that there is absolutely nothing on earth like Italy. Granted, although I have only seen a small percentage of the inhabited world, let alone in Europe, Italy really sticks out in my mind as a very unique place compared to some of the other European countries I have visted. Don’t get me wrong, every country is unique, it’s cities and towns carved out by it’s unique culture. And I really love all the places that I have visited: small eastern European cities like Prague and Bratislava are breathtaking, London is one of my favorite cities in Europe, and Berlin will always take first place in my heart, for example. But Italy just has this indescribable Je-ne-sais-quoi (is it wrong to use a French phrase here?) about it that I just cannot put my finger on. Maybe it’s the old rustic romance – found both in the Tuscan hills as well as the narrow streets of Florence – and all of the art and chaos mixed with the ancient past, but Italy has captured my heart in a way I never thought a place could.

What city or place has captured your heart in an unexpected way?

  • Italy does have that je-ne-sais-quoi vibe, doesn’t it? I think it’s just the rustic feel, the colours and the sun, but also the charm of the people and the …oldness that makes it look so effortless and beautiful. These pictures too, capture it wonderfully. :)

    • rae

It really really does and yes I agree with you it really is something about the rusticness the nature and the sun! But you are right also the charm of the people!

  • This sent me right down memory lane. Italy is a very special country. Where else would you find a stripey cathedral like the one in Siena? Tuscany is so so beautiful!

I was certainly lucky to be someplace beautiful while sick, but it did make doing my job and enjoying the location a bit difficult. I have never been to Portovenere but I would love to visit one day. The fortress ruin sounds incredible.
