Everyone keeps talking about how sad they are about summer ending, and although we are well into August, I’m choosing to ignore all the naysayers. Summer starts and ends a lot later here in Berlin anyway, and if the heatwave this week is any indication, the warm is definitely here to stay. The sun might be starting to set earlier, but it is still light out at 8 PM. Granted, summer always feels too short compared to the ridiculous Berlin winters that would even make Russia jealous – something I am clearly looking forward to with such joy (note the sarcasm). But even knowing that come mid to late September I’ll be working on my layering game, I’m choosing to ignore it. Hell, even if I were still in Virginia where the summer is coming to a sleepy end, why lament the simultaneously near and distant future when I could be enjoying sticky warm nights? I’m busy looking to do just about everything and anything outdoors for as long as the good summer vibes are flowing, and have been going to open-air film nights, rooftop bars, public parks, street food festivals and everything else in between.

But as amazing as summer in the city can be (and trust me! it really is), there is something so calming and intimate about quite summers spent closer to nature with beautiful summer skies that reach into every corner of the earth, hugging the edges between land and air – I swear the sunsets in Virginia are the most beautiful I have ever seen -, stalks of grass tall enough to tickle your nose, flowing bodies of cool water, and soft breezes coming through open windows and open doors. The collection of photos above all give me that quiet country summer feeling where the sky is still lit up after dark from all the lightning bugs navigating their way through the night.

  • Here in California it’s ridiculously hot so I can’t wait for summer to be over. We have those sticky warm nights here.. yuck! But if you enjoy the summer and it’s just about to begin in Berlin then enjoy the most of it while you can!!

It’s funny how when it’s unbearably hot we wish for winter but when it’s terribly cold we want summer. Summer isn’t about to begin exactly, but it does last longer than in the US where I am from!

      • I actually like the winter more than the summer so I wish it would rain much more often that it does here in California! Heat can be nice but in moderation… not everyday!! Well I do hope you enjoy your summer when it comes around though! x

Oh no! Heatwave :( It was going good here (getting cooler) and it suddenly spiked a little. Guess we should enjoy the little heat :)

  • I really love your description of a quiet summer, one spent close to nature with clear skies. I am also refusing to believe the end of summer may be in sight and choosing to continue eating ice cream and wearing open-toed shoes even though the temperature is hovering around 15°C!

Have a lovely (warm) weekend :)

Thanks Aimee. And where do you live that it’s always hot year round? Sometimes I think I would love that, but I also do love having changing seasons.

      • I live in the Philippines and the climates are only two, its either dry or wet, through out the year its hot :)) I live in a tropical country by the way and I always wanted to experience snow, I only see it in movies and such.

  • I love all the pictures you put together! Summer is ending but I’m looking forward to fall too.

  • For me Summer definitely represents nature, beaches and inland adventures, diving into fresh waterholes and soaking up the sun! And all those things are just ridiculously happy ridden!

    • rae

Oh fresh watering holes sound amazing!

  • Amazing pictures! I hate the Summer (I’m called a weirdo when I state this, but I embrace it!) and I’m really looking forward to the colder months and the nicer oufits (I love layering!) I’m glad I live in the UK where Summer only lasts two weekends xD

thanks Sarah! And wow, I don’t think I have ever met a person who doesn’t like Summer but you are definitely living in the right place then if you love colder months! I do like fall and even winter but Berlin winters are so bitter that they stop being enjoyable winters when the temperatures enter really bitter below freezing digits.
