interior adventures is a series all about my adventures (& misadventures) in re-doing and re-decorating my flat.

Breaking up 101: Find things to do that occupy your time. This is best done with other people. So hang the shit out with your friends and keep yourself busy. Because it’s the moments that you are alone that are the hardest. However, if you DO find yourself alone, give yourself a new project to occupy your time and trick your mind into thinking it’s busy with some super important (but actually really not) task like re-decorating your flat.

If you couldn’t properly surmise from that first sentence, I am currently in throes of a break up. (Which explains why LFB’s activity took a bit of a hit last week) Now, I’m sure a lot of you are scratching your heads going, “Wait. But didn’t they JUST get back together…?” Yes, yes we did. But unfortunately it wasn’t working out like either of us had hoped. We both still really love each other, but know that this is what is best – at least for now. At this point in time, I can confidently say that I really sincerely hope there is still more to this story to be told, but for now, I’m just trying to go through the breakup process like any average 20-something year old would, alternating between osmosifying with my couch and spending some much needed and amazing time with people I am so lucky to call my friends, eating and smoking my feelings (yes, I’m giving myself a free pass for a few weeks), and embarking on a new project that I hope will occupy a substantial amount of brain space for now.

I’ve been quite dissatisfied with my living room and entrance way for quite some time now, so I will be overhauling everything over the next several weeks-months. I’m stretching my interlaced fingers, both metaphorically and literally, and getting the fuck down to business. I’ve already thinned my pockets out quite a bit by purchasing the stunning piece of botanical wall art that you can see in the top of this collage, but re-absorbed much of it by selling an old wardrobe online. I decided that it might be a bit of a fun adventure to catalogue this adventure here on LFB, so stay tuned for more posts as I deal with my emotions through retail therapy and design.

  • That grey sofa tho.
Break-ups are a pain. Even on good terms they are a pain in the bum, but redecorating sounds like an absolutely brilliant way to fill your time. That skull is fucking gorgeous, my best friend spent time travelling in Spain and came back with hundred of skulls. Apparently north Spain is a great place to find dead animals.
Also, there could be a lot worse things to do than smoke, says the chain smoker. Sometimes we do need to go back to realise that right now things aren’t right. Hurry and get to London. We’ll find a beer garden in the sun :)

Thanks so much for your words Erin – yeah it is a total bummer. I mean it’s nice to break up on good terms but in some way it’s even harder because under different circumstances we would definitely still be together. But yes! Decorating has definitely taken my mind off of some things. Can’t wait to meet you next week too! Would you actually want to come out on Saturday? I will be with friends during the day, and you could come hang out with us and get dinner too if you like!

      • Yes, of course! I’m in London anyway with the man at a zine fair, but obviously escaping that is always on the cards :)
Where abouts are you staying? Or eating, and everything else :)

  • Find things to do . I swear, I think I got really into blogging because I was trying to get over a break up. I was doing everything I could to spend my time not thinking about him, and it worked. Well, for the most of it. A cup of hot tea and Taylor Swift certainly helped too…

It’s okay, I think this is incredible though! The designs are so pretty <3

Blogging is a great way to take you time off of the heartbreak. And I have to admit I am a huge fan of both hot tea AND Taylor. She’s basically my spirit animal.

  • Break ups are terrible things to go through but it only makes you stronger! Also, finding projects to do helps loads and there’s nothing better than hanging out with friends and family!

Very true! Thanks for your kind words, Sarah!

  • I’m really sorry to hear that, Rae. Breakups are such a hard thing to go through, but I believe that it’ll get better and you’ll be a stronger person afterwards. Please take care of yourself during this stage! I smoked a bit after my ex and I broke up, too. It was years ago, but it was my first serious relationship so it sucked. Smoking is so bad for your health, but it’s oddly calming at the same time and I feel like it helped keep me sane at the times I was about to break down. I haaated the smell of it though, so it’s not something I got addicted to. Last weekend I decluttered a lot of the clothes and makeup I don’t use anymore and have them in boxes and bags to sell or give away. It feels nice to finally clear up some space!

Thank you so much for your kind words, Becky. I don’t know why, but there is something about being sad and smoking that just kind of goes together even though it’s bad for you. I am trying to resist the urge to smoke for the most part though!

  • breakups are hard but there is always something better when we move on…for now, its all about finding things that can renew you and well enjoy you :)

Rae, I know you know this already but I’m saying it anyways: THINGS ALWAYS GET BETTER! You’re so right to go out, keep yourself occupied with normally fun stuff. And try and make a habit of smiling when you wake up – a small, quite stupid, but very brilliant tip on how to feel better each day.

Thanks so much for your kind words, and I definitely think that smiling when you wake up can really help. I also think it’s nice to think of one thing you are thankful for each day in the morning as it will shape the rest of your day with positivity :)
