If you have been following along on instagram or snapchat (@lovefromberlin), you may have realized that I am currently in the US (and will be until the 1st of June). For the past three days, I have been vacationing in Florida with my family, soaking up the sun at the beach and cooling down in both the ocean and the pool. And although this is technically my summer holiday, I have also been trying to use the time to get a bit ahead with work for Love from Berlin and somehow re-establish that fitness routine that I’ve never quite exactly successfully established in the past. Which brings me to the topic of this post – work vs. play.

I figure that there are four major schools of thought when it comes to working on holiday:
Great, I am on holiday!…
1. Finally have some time to catch up on all the shit I’m behind on!
2. Good thing I’m hella organized and can just sit back and relax.
3. Time to get started on everything that’s not even due yet. Relaxation, what are you even?
4. I’m super behind on work, but I’ll be damned if I do any during this trip besides eat all the foods and spend most of my time in a reclining position either in a beach lounge chair or in my hotel bed eating all the foods.

Now, I am a self-admitted workaholic. But because Love from Berlin is currently a side-project, no matter how organized and on top of my shit I am, it is very rare that I am actually ahead of schedule with work. And thus, at the moment, I definitely fall into group one. Meaning, even though I should probably cut myself some slack due to the fact that my being behind is not a reflection of my work ethic, and holidays are needed and important – both for mental health and long-term work stamina – I just can’t seem to lay poolside free of worry. Nope. Instead I took breakfast in bed (still clearly a holiday perk) in order to work on some behind-the-scenes LFB work, all the while simultaneously feeling guilty that I have been behind on replying to comments and hadn’t posted since the 16th.

Granted, I also saw my holiday as a great opportunity to try and kick start some kind of semblance of a workout routine, so I am pretty sure that my workaholic tendencies supersede purely getting a handle on work-related things. But when your side-project (or full time job) calls for creating online content and being present on social media, working while on holiday is not just about catching up on work or getting ahead of things. It’s about using the unique opportunity of being in a new and exciting location to create new content as well. Thus, besides setting aside a good few hours a day during my trip to write up content for LFB, I also spent the majority of my trip concerning myself with keeping my social media accounts updated and photographically documenting my surroundings and experiences for future LFB content.

I am sure this differs from blogger to blogger, but for me, I am constantly aware that half of the content I share with you all on LFB is content that I am creating. And for this reason, when I am on holiday, I am constantly thinking about what I can share with you guys, what posts I am going to write, and which pictures I need to take to accompany them – especially because travel content is some of the most interesting and useful content for a lot of people.

In a perfect world, Love from Berlin would be just as much a part of my working life as my other projects, but even then, I would still face the dilemma of just eating my damned breakfast and jumping into the ocean without thinking twice about photographing it all or using this holiday as an opportunity to create. I think this is something that most bloggers struggle with and to be honest, I haven’t hit the sweet spot yet. And although I was unable to just turn off my phone, set my camera down and just enjoy my surroundings for what they were, there is a part of me that is happy to capture it all. I love taking photos of everything first and foremost as a photographer. I also love running my little space on the internet and creating things to share on LFB. I am just hoping that I eventually figure out how to find a happy medium between work and play and to know when and when not to combine the two and to be able to do so without feeling guilty about it.

Which camp do you fall into? How do you deal with managing work and play?

Thanks, hadas! I am actually in Florida but California is amazing too.

  • Hope you’re having a good time over there right now, working or not! I find whenever I have time off I’m so torn between catching up on work or using it to relax, I don’t do either thing properly and I end up feeling really unsatisfied. I definitely do know what you mean by the constant feeling of documenting things for the blog, it’s almost automatic/a compulsion for me now. I don’t really know if that’s healthy, but I do love the process from photo to blog post (which I guess is why I do it!).

Thanks so much Jane. The trip was much needed and too short! I think we are all still trying to figure out how best to budget our time. Although, to be honest, I don’t think that our generation has bad time management skills, I just think our expectations are too high and we hold ourselves to impossible standards in terms of what can actually be completed in 24 hours!

  • i know exactly what you mean, i just got back from rome and while i was there, i was constantly thinking about what to photograph for my blog and what photos to post on instagram. i don’t really see it as a bad thing though. i know a lot of people probably think it’s taking away from the moment and such, but as you said, if it’s what you love to do then do it! it’s definitely possible to do both and then you have everything to look back on later on.

Hey Aimee – Maybe there was a bit of confusion but I was not in Berlin, I live in Berlin but was on holiday in the US :) And there is a new post up today, so definitely take a look!

  • I struggle. Posting (especially food posts) takes a hell of a lot of time. The food ones in particular what with baking, needing GOOD photos, and then writing up the recipe itself as well as the actual post takes time. I’m horribly busy far too much, especially since moving to London, and I really don’t want to see the blog as a chore.
Plus, because I want to start my Cake Care Package thing up soon I need to start weighing up all sorts of things with that.

Glad you’re enjoying yourself though, everyone needs a break (I really do!) x

Blogging takes so much time, if only people realized how much goes into even creating one blog post! But keep at it, Micheal, I am sure you will find your own personal rhythm soon.

  • While I’ve only been blogging for two months and it’s a side hobby (I say hobby, but I really mean work), I’ve spent every other spare time I have working on it. It’s hectic, it’s insane, it’s exhausting but I just can’t seem to stop?? Here’s to finding the balance between work and play because I’m still lost here. Cheers, and have a (relaxing) great weekend!

  • I fully agree. I had only really just started to get right into blogging when I went on vacation for a month to the US. I also didn’t have my own laptop, just my partners so I didn’t want to steal it for blogging 24/7 but I sorta wish I had blogged more maybe.

  • I try to step away from blogging during vacation, but as I keep going with it, it is definitely harder to step back! Definitely try and enjoy your holiday, your readers will still be here!

  • I know exactly what you mean! I always set aside a little time to work on my blog during all of my vacations because the travel posts are so interesting and get such high traffic, it’s a shame not to do it! Luckily my boyfriend is a great photographer and a good sport so he doesn’t get too upset with me :)

It is honestly so nice to have a boyfriend who is also a photographer because then you can get them to take a few photos of you for your blog on travels and you know that they will be nice photos :) I think it’s fine to set aside some time on holidays to work on the blog but it’s also super important to have some real quality R&R!

      • wow :) long time

  • Hi Rae!

This is a very interesting post! I always enjoy reading about the things I am battling with from another person’s perspective. I do love blogging, but it’s very time-consuming and sometimes it’s just difficult to find time for everything because there are so many things that I want to do and at the same time, I just want to relax and stop thinking too much.

Thanks for sharing this post, it definitely made me think about stuff, I don’t normally worry about! :)

I think that the hard part about blogging is that so much of the content we create comes from our daily lives so it’s kind of hard to know where and how to draw boundaries.

Really glad you enjoyed the post, Mathilde!

  • i’m a pretty even mix between type one and type four. if i have a free saturday or sunday i’ll think to myself, “great i can get blog stuff done” and either spend the day working on it or i’ll waste the whole day doing absolutely nothing, haha. it comes with a bit of guilt but at the same time blogging isn’t my job and for me personally it’s more important to enjoy my time off and make sure i feel okay about everything and put myself first if i feel like i need some time to just not do anything or to enjoy a holiday without worrying about anything else. it’s a tricky balance to get right for bloggers these days, especially because i’m definitely not as active on social media as most other bloggers because of my priorities. but oh well, everyone just has to do things at their own pace and do whatever makes them happy. :)

I definitely think that you have a very healthy way of looking at blogging and self-care in general. Funnily enough, my latest post kind of dives into some of the points you bring up. While I do love blogging, I just see sometimes that I am just hot as happy when I am stuck worrying about blogging or sitting behind a computer screen as I am when I forget about blogging and just have a good time with friends. I am going to try to bridge that gap more and more and bring my camera with me and hopefully my friends will just get used to it over time so that hanging out can also sometimes be an opportunity to create content, but honestly, so many of my friends are not even on social media at all but I kind of like it that way. When we hang out it’s purely for the hangs. Then again, I do feel like blogging can push us to do more exciting things in terms of wanting to create and put out great content too.

  • Dude, looking forward to your returning posts.
