In the Home is all about interior design and making your cozy space your own.

I’m still putting the finishing touches on my bedroom, but I’m already dreaming about fixing up all the other rooms in my flat. As such, I have been spending lots of my time looking up inspiring images to aid in my re-design. I realized that I have been focusing a lot on bedrooms and living rooms, and have totally neglected the bathroom and kitchen. So let’s change that and start with bathrooms first.

Now, I’m not sure if many of you know this, but bathrooms in Germany and bathrooms in the US are surprisingly different. In Germany, the washing machines are housed in the bathroom, and the walls are tiled almost all the way to the ceiling. I also have two cats so my bathroom is theirs as well (mi baño es su baño?). For any of you do don’t have cats, let me let you in on a little secret: litter boxes are big, bulky pieces of plastic shit. (I’m still waiting for a company to be established that will create cat accessories that actually blend in with the rest of your furniture rather. Seriously, why is everything for cats either made in really bright colors or plastered with fucking paw prints? If anyone has any ideas or tips for small but decent looking litter boxes, please let me know in the comment section down below!) Based on these factors, I’ve basically given up hope of ever turning my bathroom into a stunning example of prime interior design work, but I’ve rounded up these photos anyway as a source of inspiration for both you and me.

As you are all well aware, I am really drawn to bohemian, industrial and rustic witchy interiors, so here are some of my favorite rustic bohemian bathrooms, all of which are linked together by some common themes:

rustic and bohemian bathroom inspiration for lovefromberlin.net found on pinterest

Elements of a rustic bohemian bathroom:

1: plants
2: old paintings
3: vintage mirrors
4: rustic wood details
5: copper details
6: a basic color palette: white, black, copper, wood (aged)
7: rustic wire baskets
8: glass jars and bottles

These themes and smaller details could definitely still be (and will be!) applied to my (or your) bathroom without having to gut the whole damned space and starting from scratch. So expect to hear more about my bathroom re-design soon. Will also try to throw some DIYs in the mix. Exciting, right?

What does your bathroom look like? What is your particular design style?

Oh gosh your comment about litter boxes, haha. Yeah they aren’t visually pleasing, and are just annoying and in the way.

You always put together the most badass inspiration posts that ignite my creativity and make me want to go out & buy things for a dream room I don’t have yet lol. I’d love a big, modern bathroom with lots & lots of black and floor to ceiling windows. That’d be a dream.

Rae, I totally agree on the litter boxes! I don’t have a cat of my own, but my sister does and we have both struggled to come up with a place for the litter box that doesn’t showcase the bright plastic colors. Also, I feel it’s so true that people can forget about interior design when it comes to kitchens and bathrooms; the photos above are inspirational! eyelashglitter.com

  • I am someone who lives in the Netherlands so I would say my bathroom is a lot more like the ones in Germany… but I never knew there was quite a difference depending on where you went. I am someone who knows basically nothing about interior design but I can tell when a place looks good as I know those photos do. Lovely <3

    • rae

The bathrooms in the US where I grew up are very different. The tile is only located where the bath/shower is and the rest of the bathroom is just painted or wallpapered. We also usually have a room for the washer (AND dryer as well) in homes. In apartments, oftentimes they fit them into a closet across from the kitchens or they have a bunch of them for the whole apartment complex in the basement.

  • I absolutely love how relaxing and earthy this decor is! xx

      No worries!

  • I love the idea of bathrooms tiled all around! I agree with the litter tray! My mum was looking for one quite similar for our cat (but then he passed away) but it was like a cubic design, almost like a mini cubicle which the cat could go in and do its business and come out again – you could put like a plant pot on it etc but I forgot what it’s called (sorry!)

    Pop over to my blog!

    Sarah

    • rae

Sounds interesting, maybe I should look into finding a prettier box. I have looked in the past, but the problem is that it also needs to be fairly small and I have two in the bathroom as I have two kitties. So sorry to hear that your kitty passed away :(

  • now i really want a bathroom makeover. :( with a really big bath tub!!

    theleeday.com

    • rae

Right? I am so happy my flat has a bathtub because so many of them in Berlin don’t have them!

  • Can I move into those bathrooms? I LOVE the tile in the first picture. I personally like a little industrial + a little mid century modern + a little Shaker style. While city living is a bit more my style I could also be happy in an old farmhouse.

    • rae

Oh I so would love to as well. And yes – love that kind of a mix. I think you can def. incorporate some of those farmhousey vibes in the city as well though!

  • all those examples are so beautiful and totes in agreement about the cat situation :(

    • rae

Thanks Fee, and yes, the cat problem is a real struggle, haha.

  • thefashionsalt

I’m surprised that the washing machine is in the bathroom, though I do like the idea of having tiled walls. Maybe you could make or find some type of wood or copper structure to put the litter box in. The pictures are beautiful and inspiring!
    ~Lili
    http://www.thefashionsalt.com

    • rae

It is pretty funny, but there would really be no other place for it to fit. We do not have a separate laundry room or closet in Germany.

  • Gorgeous! I am currently trying to bring more rustic-style details into my apartment so this post was very helpful. Also, all of those images are so Pinterest-friendly!

    • rae

So glad this could be helpful to you. Def. take a look back at past “in the home” posts, because I have posted a lot of past rustic boho rooms as well. Good luck with your re-design! Would love to see some photos of the progress!

  • I also love this style of interior decor! I think that your picture inspirations look lovely :)

  • I LOVE the look of these bathrooms! And I laughed out loud at your litter box rant, haha!
I live in Canada, and I’ve been/lived in a handful of apartments where the washer and dryer were housed in the bathroom, though I think it was probably out of lack of space anywhere else in the apartment more than anything!

    • rae

Aren’t they just stunning? And haha, yeah litter boxes are like the bane of cat-owning interior design freaks like me.

  • ALL OF THIS. everything about it. i’m just referring to this post the next time we move. kthanksxxo.

    • rae

So glad you enjoyed these finds, Annie! So glad it could be a source of inspiration for your next move!

  • I love all of these examples! When I buy a place chances are it’s either going to have a modern bathroom or an original one that’s at least 30 years old which I would then have to eventually do up myself. It’s such a difficult room because they’re often so small and they also really need to be functional as well, i.e. cat litter trays, washing machines, toilets. But it seems we’re both determined to make them look as nice as possible, haha.

I think worst case I’d just paint all the walls/tiles white and try and add a few shelves to put cute pot plants and frames and things on so it looks a bit prettier if you can’t do a massive overhaul and start from scratch.

    jessica – littlehenrylee.com

    • rae

I actually think if you get one that is 30 years old it may be a blessing in disguise because you will be able to really do so much with it and if you do it yourself you can probably manage it relatively inexpensively. I agree though, they are such hard rooms to manage due to them having to be functional first and foremost. Mine is very small so it is quite cramped with the washing machine and litter boxes. Don’t really think there is actually a real solution there design wise.

Your worse case scenario actually does not sound half bad! hope you will blog about your moving in process!

  • I’m torn between modern and something more eclectic that’s practical… These are beautiful! Haha and yes to ugly ass litter boxes…! If you find a good one, I’m all ears!!

    • rae

Oh I am such a fan of super modern as well. I tried to do the whole black and white minimalistic thing but it just did not fit with the layout and architecture of my flat though :( And will keep you posted if I finally find a decent looking one!
